Based on the United States Golfers Association the typical golf score in the USA is about 105. Because putts make up about 40% of the typical golf score that means that most golfers are making more than 40 putts per round. That translates into 4 – 5 three putts a round, or worse.
If that seems like you, then your putting mistakes are keeping you at “average” and you do not have to be. If you could reduce your number of putts to a more reasonable 30 – 32 putts per round, you would automatically become a “better than average” golfer, and without doing a darn thing differently – other than learning the correct putting techniques.
1. Ball Position. From whom did you learn the right ball position for your distinctive build and temperament? Was it trial and error – but mostly error? Did you ever hear about setting up with your dominant eye? Ball position is a critical putting technique, and it’s completely different for every man, woman and child who plays golf.
2. The Putting Grip. Do you know that researching the putting grips of the pros on TV, or even the best golfers on the course, is providing you the wrong message? There is one thing that is so deceiving about gazing either at your own hands or at another golfer’s hands on the putter grip, that correcting this basic mistake will roll more putts on line then you ever have before in your life.
3. Lining Up Your Feet. No matter how careful you are there is a very good chance that the way you line up your feet to make a putt takes the ball off line to the break or to the hole. You hardly ever notice it on a long, breaking putt, but oh brother, you notice it big time when those 3 footers kiss the lip and keep on rolling past the hole.
You need to know more. Good putting techniques are a learned skill. Even if you will never-ever reach a par 5 in two, you can be a much better putter than those long hitters, and take their money besides – if you learn the right putting techniques from the right teacher.
