One of the vital indicators on FX charts is the Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator or MACD for short. Two important utilities for this is to provide a check when employing other techniques or as a stand alone indicator.
The MACD chart determines faster and slower moving averages and whether they are reaching closer together (converging) or farther apart (diverging).
Two lines moving towards each other as well as condensing bars on the bottom histogram symbolizes converging. A signal that the current trend is either closing or has terminated.

The counteraction of the faster line to trends is more expeditious in comparison to the slower line. Therefore, the slower line will be reached and eventually converged by the faster line. If it then breaks or diverges from the slower line, this is mostly an indicator that a new trend has begun.
Upon their intersecting, bars on the histogram are on zero after which they reverse their axis advancing below if they were atop, and above if they were below. A rapid enlargement of the bars are barometers that novel and sound trend is now forming.
This intersection then can be worked as an alert to begin a trade. A faster line crossing the slower line from under is an indicator to buy while crossing from above indicates that one should sell.
But all is not well with the MACD, with some problems rendering it imperfect to be the sole trading tool. The main difficulty is that even the so-called fast line is notably, behind actual prices as it calculates averages of the past prices. Thus trends could be ceasing in a short-lived market change before seeing the beginning flash on the MACD intersection.

Usually the MACD is a competent indicator of the stability of a trend than it is of its direction. Because of this, the bar lengths on the histogram become the object of concern of several traders, and just disregarding the crossover. That said, it is imprudent to use divergence as a signal to buy and to depart on the basis of an adverse price movement.

In summary, other indicators on FX charts are usually better determinants of buy or sell decisions for amateur traders, reserving the MACD for general market analysis.
